Eneco project Kruisvaartkade

District heating project in the city centre of Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Project Background

In 1964, Eneco installed a district heating connection in Utrecht. This connection is an essential part of the city’s heating network and supplies thousands of households and businesses with heat during the winter. Due to its age, we had to replace the entire connection. At the same time, the municipality of Utrecht plans to build residential towers adjacent to the pipeline route.

Pipeline Route and Key Crossings

The new pipeline runs from a pumping station north of the railway tracks to Reviuskade. Along this route:

  • The pipeline crosses a few tram tracks
  • Passes under 16 railway lines using an updated concrete-steel carrier pipe method
  • Crosses the Kruisvaart via a submerged pipeline system
  • Connects back to the existing network at Reviuskade

Our Activities

We provided extensive engineering and consultancy services, including:

  • Design of the new district heating connection
  • Strength calculations for structural integrity during operation
  • Soil assessments for the installation phase and long-term performance
  • Advice and consultation on construction methods and related pipeline engineering topics
