Carbon capturing project

Carbon capturing, transport through pipeline and storage in offshore gasfield. Project in
the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Project Background

Porthos stands for Port of Rotterdam CO₂ Transport Hub and Offshore Storage. It is a flagship carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the Netherlands, designed to collect CO₂ from industrial emitters in the Port of Rotterdam and permanently store it in depleted offshore gas fields under the North Sea.

Pipeline Route

The pipeline runs all the way from the Botlek area in the Port of Rotterdam to the shore about 25km to the west. After, the ofshore pipeline follows a path to a former gasfield in the North Sea at about 30km distance from the shore.

Our Activities

We provided extensive engineering and consultancy services for the onshore pipeline and interface between onshore and ofshore, including:

  • Strength calculations for structural integrity during construction and operation
  • Routing and detail design
  • Risk assessment of drilling technique
  • Soil assessments for the installation phase and long-term performance
  • Advice and consultation on construction methods and longevity
